tommy-sands-colour72 TOMMY SANDS – Ireland

Solo and with Moya and Fionån

Also enquiries for THE SANDS FAMILY

Described by Sing Out as ‘the most powerful songwriter in Ireland, if not the rest of the world’, Tommy Sands, Co Down’s singer, songwriter and social activist has achieved something akin to legendary status in his own lifetime. His songs, which have been recorded by Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, The Dubliners, Kathy Matthea, Dolores Keane, Sean Keane, Frank Patterson, DickGaughan, The Irish Rovers and many others, have been translated into many languages and currently There were Roses, and Daughters and Sons are included in the English language syllabus in German secondary schools.

Usually available solo and with Moya and Fionån, he is also available with The Sands Family.

Tommy often tours with two startlingly capable young musicians – son Fionan and daughter Moya. With Tommy on vocals/guitar, Moya on fiddle/vocals/bodhran/whistle, and Fionan on mandolin/banjo, the sound is livelier than ever. The music moves from traditional Irish to contemporary folk, and Tommy’s lyrics evoke images of Ireland and make edgier commentaries on social consciousness.

Of Tommy it has been said that ‘when he plays, you just can’t get people to go home’.

‘You’d have to be some mean class of bastard to dislike this music.’ Eamon McCann (Hot Press)

‘Tommy Sands has achieved that difficult but wonderful balance between knowing and loving the traditions of his home and being concerned with the future of the whole world.’ Pete Seeger

For unforeseen reasons, we are postponing Tommy Sands’ next tour till 2011. Meantime enquiries are invited for Tommy with Moya and Fionån  for Festivals in 2011.
