MAGPIE – USA
‘Simply, absolutely, unequivocally wonderful’ – Colin Irwin reporting a live Festival gig in Melody Maker
Magpie are musicians and singers Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner. From classic country, swing, and blues of the nineteen twenties and thirties, to contemporary songs written by themselves and others, Terry and Greg cover a lot of musical ground. What makes Magpie special is their warm, captivating performance and the rapport they establish with their audience whether playing to sixty people in a folk club or a vast, Festival main stage crowd. In 1998 they won a Washington Area Music Award (a WAMMIE) in the traditional music category – no small achievement and a great way to celebrate 25 years as a duo. They also had the honour of being asked to appear on the double album in honour of Pete Seeger.
‘Greg and Terry can show us all what a wonderful thing it can be for two voices to harmonise together. And what a great bunch of songs!’ – Pete Seeger about Give Light
‘This is the best album I’ve heard in the last five years! Magpie have always been a thoroughly enjoyable duo but in this album they have really hit an artistic high point’ – Art Thieme in Come for to Sing
‘Magpie, the duo of Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner, proved their versatility by appearing in workshops covering such diverse musical areas as country duets, jazz, and work songs. They handle all that material with skill and conviction, and one would hope they will return again soon.’ (Vancouver Folk Music Festival) – Fiona McQuarrie, The Province (Vancouver,
